French Exam - BEPC Session 2022

This official French examination for the Brevet d'Etudes du Premier Cycle (BEPC), 2022 session, is a comprehensive paper consisting of three parts assessing fundamental French language skills: spelling correction, written expression, and text analysis.

Part 1: Spelling Correction

The proposed text is an excerpt from The Red Car by Jean Pliya, taken from the work L'Arbre fetiche. It features Mensavi, an observant young boy, who contemplates the ballet of traffic lights and the movement of cars in an African city. The passage describes an urban scene rich in visual detail. Candidates must identify and correct sixteen errors of various kinds: punctuation, accent, capitalization, word hyphenation, simple spelling, spelling with semantic impact, grammar, and conjugation errors.

Part 2: Written Expression

Three topics are offered for choice, providing great variety for candidates:

  • Topic 1 (Descriptive text): The candidate describes an unsanitary neighborhood cluttered with household waste and plastic debris, denounces irresponsible behaviors, and proposes solutions to preserve a healthy environment.
  • Topic 2 (Argumentative text): The candidate addresses the problem of violence in schools, presents its causes and consequences, then proposes preventive measures.
  • Topic 3 (Narrative text): The candidate recounts participation in a cultural event and raises awareness among peers about the need for cultural rootedness.

Part 3: Text Analysis

The supporting text is a famous excerpt from The Dark Child by Camara Laye, which poetically describes the rice harvest season in Tindican in December, the rituals associated with earth spirits, and the festive atmosphere surrounding the harvest. Questions cover:

  • Text comprehension (4 points): title, characteristic expressions, role of spirits, personal reflection on the appreciation of traditional festivals.
  • Language knowledge and usage (4 points): word decomposition, derived adjectives, degrees of comparison, verb tenses and usage values.

The complete answer key is included with detailed correction guidelines and grading scales for each question. This document is an excellent revision tool for ninth-grade students preparing for the BEPC. It enables students to practice spelling accuracy, structured written production, and in-depth textual analysis.

Target audience: BEPC candidates, ninth-grade students in Cameroon and French-speaking Africa.
