This mock examination in Physics, Chemistry and Technology (PCT) comes from the Bilingual High School of Bafoussam and was designed to prepare students for the BEPC 2020 session. This paper, from a leading school in the West Region of Cameroon, offers a rigorous assessment in line with national examination standards.
Part A, "Resource Assessment", is divided into two exercises. Exercise 1 assesses fundamental knowledge through several activities: a matching exercise between concepts (maintenance, molecule, cracking, atom) and their definitions; multiple-choice questions on plastics (polyethylene) and atomic charge; writing the formula of an ion; parts of an electric motor (stator and rotor) and the role of the camshaft; production of alternating current; and types of maintenance (preventive and corrective). Exercise 2 deepens practical skills with problems on chemical reactions (combustion of aluminium, Lavoisier's law), aqueous solutions (potassium sulphate, identification test for the sulphate ion using barium chloride, concentration calculations), and rotational motion transmission (gear trains, transmission ratio, pitch diameter, kinematic chain).
Part B, "Skills Assessment", is particularly original. It features a dialogue between two students, Souleymane and Ngono, in front of a petrol station, addressing the themes of petroleum, fire safety and plastics. The required tasks include: settling the students' debate about the origin and extraction of crude oil, explaining why ordinary water cannot extinguish a Class C fire (gas fires) using a fire classification table and extinction products, and preparing a training unit on environmental awareness related to non-biodegradable plastics.
The complete answer key accompanies the paper, with detailed answers, balanced equations, annotated calculations and explanations for each competency task. This answer key enables effective self-correction and an in-depth understanding of the concepts covered.
This paper is an excellent preparation tool for the BEPC as it provides balanced coverage of chemistry, physics, technology and environmental issues, while developing critical thinking and the ability to solve real-life problems.
