This official Physics, Chemistry and Technology (PCT) examination from the BEPC 2019 session is a national exam paper designed for Form 4 students in Cameroon. Structured in two distinct major parts, it comprehensively assesses both theoretical knowledge and practical skills of candidates in the three combined disciplines of physics, chemistry and technology.
Part A, entitled "Resource Assessment", is divided into two complementary exercises. Exercise 1 focuses on essential knowledge and tests mastery of fundamental definitions. Students must notably state the law of conservation of matter (Lavoisier's law), write dissolution equations such as that of silver nitrate, define the concept of pH of an aqueous solution and that of petroleum refining, identify a plastic material with its symbol, and complete a technical diagram. Exercise 2 is centred on applying knowledge and skills. It includes a stoichiometry problem involving the reaction between iron and sulphur to produce iron sulphide, where the student must write the balanced equation and calculate a quantity of matter. A second problem involves analysing an oscillogram: determining the maximum voltage, the effective value and the frequency of an alternating voltage.
Part B, "Skills Assessment", presents a highly concrete contextualised problem situation. The Makembe family wishes to purchase an electric kettle and must choose between two models with different specifications (power ratings of 1500W and 2000W, prices of 12,000 and 18,000 FCFA). The student must apply their knowledge of domestic electricity to calculate energy consumption, compare operating costs and formulate a well-argued recommendation. This type of exercise develops analytical ability, scientific reasoning applied to everyday life and informed decision-making.
The complete answer key is included in this document. It details all expected answers with demonstrations, intermediate calculations and conclusions. Physics and chemistry formulae are clearly explained, and each step of the reasoning is justified. This answer key is a valuable pedagogical tool for self-assessment and revision.
This paper is particularly recommended for students preparing for the BEPC who wish to practise with official examinations. It covers a broad spectrum of the PCT syllabus: solution chemistry, chemical reactions, electricity and energy, thus offering complete and balanced exam preparation.
