English Zero Exam - BEPC Session 2019

This English zero exam for the BEPC 2019 session is an official reference document accompanied by a detailed answer key. Designed to serve as a model for candidates and teachers, this document illustrates the format, difficulty level, and types of questions expected in the official BEPC examination.

Exam Structure:

  • Section A - Grammar (10 marks): Three exercises. The first is a dialogue between Moussa and Babila about learning English and everyday bilingualism. Candidates must choose from a list of words (but, long, speaking, also, good, at, both, unless, so that, only) to complete the dialogue coherently. The second exercise focuses on sentence rewriting: third conditional, relative pronouns (whose), and future tense transformation. The third tests conjunctions (nor), comparatives (deadlier), phrasal verbs (stood up), and conditional type II (would).
  • Section B - Vocabulary (10 marks): Two parts. A definition-matching exercise with key words (tenant, patriotism, drought, democracy, media) covering social sciences, politics, and media vocabulary. An antonym formation exercise from underlined words (hate/love, boring/interesting, intolerant/tolerant, clean/dirty, right/duty).
  • Section C - Reading Comprehension (10 marks): A current affairs text entitled "Promoting National Integration and Unity" about the celebration of the 46th edition of Cameroon's National Day. The text addresses the "Living-Together Days", the Unity and National Integration Village, the country's cultural zones (Sudano-Sahelian, Sawa, Fang-Beti, Grassfield), and mentions the security situation in the North-West and South-West regions. Questions assess factual comprehension and the ability to explain concepts such as "unity in diversity."
  • Section D - Composition (10 marks): Three topics to choose from: a speech on the negative effects of intolerance and the importance of peaceful coexistence, a school excursion narrative, and an informal letter to an uncle about the dangers of tobacco and alcohol.

This exam is intended for Form 4 students preparing for the BEPC. As a zero exam, it represents the official examination standard. The themes (bilingualism, national integration, cultural diversity, health) are deeply rooted in the Cameroonian context and reflect the civic values promoted by the educational system.
