Description

This official Life and Earth Sciences (SVT) examination, falling under Education in Environment, Hygiene and Biotechnology (EEHB), was administered during the BEPC 2018 session. This national exam paper assesses Form 4 students' knowledge and skills in the fields of geology, immunology, microbiology and genetics, with particular attention to public health issues.

Part A, "Resource Assessment", is divided into two sub-parts. Part A1 (Knowledge Assessment) includes an Exercise 1 in MCQ format covering rock weathering, biodiversity conservation, immune cells capable of phagocytosis and brewer's yeast reproduction through budding. Exercise 2 (open-ended questions) asks students to name the microorganism group of Plasmodium (protozoa) and to list routes of microbial entry. Part B1 (Skills Assessment) offers an exercise on the use of antibiotics and performing an antibiogram: its principle, identifying the most effective antibiotic and the importance of testing before prescription. A second exercise focuses on reconstructing ancient sedimentary environments from fossils found in a sedimentary basin in North Cameroon.

Part B, "Competency Assessment", addresses a major social issue: prejudices surrounding genetic anomalies within families. Through the moving story of couple X confronted with their children's sickle cell disease and accusations of witchcraft, the student must explain this hereditary disease, propose a prevention slogan encouraging screening before marriage, and design an information poster about the signs of cerebrovascular accidents (strokes).

The complete answer key is included in this document, presented in a detailed table format with assessment criteria (production relevance, mastery of scientific knowledge, production coherence). Each answer is accompanied by precise indicators enabling understanding of the examiner's expectations.

This paper is an essential revision tool for BEPC candidates. It addresses themes at the heart of the SVT/EEHB syllabus: immunology, sedimentary geology, human genetics, microbiology and health education, while developing awareness of contemporary social and health issues.
